The Course

Course content

The aim of the course is to train you to all the techniques of fashion design. After two years, you’ll be able to create a design, conceive a collection and create a piece of clothing from the pattern to the alterations. You’ll also be able to make hats and accessories.
You will be able to open your design workshop and turn your passion into a work tool.

Practical organization

Throughout the training you’ll have to:

Work on the online platform

  • Follow the units one by one
  • Validate them online
  • Create different works (drawings, clothes, etc.)
  • Hand in these works for assessment

Visit museums and exhibitions and write reports

Produce personal works

  • Make a collection of drawings based on the units and send them for assessment.

Create clothing and accessories

You’ll need the following supplies:

  • A well-performing computer (to get), equipped with a webcam and microphone, and a solid internet connection.
  • This will allow you to work on the platform and follow the video broadcasts. You’ll also be able to interact during the webinars.
  • A graphic tablet (to get).
  • Your daily tool. It will allow you to complete all of the drawing works to give, and to draw the clothes and hats of your collection. A practical and essential digital tool.
  • A sewing table (to get).
  • This table allows you to lay the cloth flat, to cut, to put together, etc. It has to have a minimum size of 2m by 1.5m. It will be very useful during the course and afterwards.
  • A haute couture Stockman mannequin (to get).
  • This Stockman mannequin must be size 38 and will allow you to put together your designs and create your patterns. It shouldn’t be replaced by another brand. It is the gold standard that should be used.
  • A complete sewing kit (to get).

Fabric to make clothes and accessories

  • Cloth, leather, paper, feathers, etc.

The 12 units

Drawing

Learning how to draw in one stroke.

Duration: 1 month
Unit must be validated online.
You’ll validate your knowledge through assessment quizzes.

Practical work: drawings to upload
You’ll send your drawings made with the graphic tablet.

Learning how to draw a figurine

Learning how to draw a figurine while respecting proportions.

Duration: 1 month

Costumes History

Learning about the history of costumes from the ancient Egyptian times until today.

Through Costumes History, you’ll learn about the evolution of styles, fabrics and techniques. It will allow you to understand art better as well as the evolutions in the aesthetics of decoration, architecture, furniture, fabric.

Duration: 2 months

Automatic drawing

In this unit, you’ll learn how to develop your imagination by using it for your creativity.

Duration: 1 month

Visiting museums and exhibitions

You’ll develop your sense of aesthetics and your culture by visiting museums with a fresh look.

Duration: 2 months

Sculpting a body

Learn how to sculpt a body on a Stockman mannequin with pattern muslin and very thin pins.

Duration: 1 month
Unit must be validated online.

Practical work:
You’ll send photos of your work.

Supplies needed: Stockman haute couture mannequin, muslin pattern, scissors, ruler, pins, long needles, red thread. Smartphone.

Bias binding and grainline

Learn how to create your clothing pieces on a Stockman mannequin, with pattern muslin and very thin pins. Learn how to cut on the bias or on the grainline.

Duration: 8 months
Unit must be validated online.

You’ll hand in photos of your work.

Supplies needed: Stockman haute couture mannequin, muslin pattern, scissors, ruler, pins, long needles, red thread, 2m x 1.40m table. Smartphone.

Your collection

You’ll choose the theme of your collection, which will be made of 7 clothing pieces, plus hats and accessories.
You’ll have to create your designer label and include it in your designs. This work will take place at the same time as the “Bias binding and grainline” unit. You’ll create each piece on the mannequin with pattern muslin, then will cut and put together the elements of your collection.

Duration: 8 months

You’ll enrich your collection by a line of accessories.

Earrings
Long necklaces

Duration: 1 month

Milliner

You’ll create hats to enhance your collection.

Duration: 1 month
Unit must be validated online.

You’ll hand in photos of your work.

Supplies needed: Stockman haute couture mannequin, muslin pattern, scissors, ruler, pins, long needles, red thread, 2m x 1.40m table. Sewing machine, electric scissors. Smartphone. Cloth, leather. A steam iron is essential.

On the lookout for technologies

You’ll have to stay up to date with the new technologies in textile, the raw material to create clothing. In September 2021, you’ll visit the “Première Vision” show, the international event for fashion professionals.

Duration: 1 month
Unit must be validated online.

Practical work:
You’ll hand in a detailed report of your visit.

Supplies needed:
Smartphone. Transportation to and accommodation in Paris will be needed.

Marketing

You’ll learn to calculate your margins to set a selling price.

Duration: 1 month
Unit must be validated online.

Practical work:
You’ll have to calculate the cost price and selling price of your collection and accessories.

Supplies needed:
Computer, Excel spreadsheet.
